Today’s Fiddle Dee Fitness Monday has a little DIY flavor. A DIY medal display, to be exact.
The husband and I have started quite the medal and bib collection. Most of our medals and bibs are hidden in drawers or thrown randomly around the house. He has a much, much larger collection than I do, but I’ll catch up to him sooner or later. I loved the idea of having “His” and “Hers” medal displays for our home.
There are a ton of options for displaying running/tri medals. Etsy and Pinterest are filled with ideas, and the ones on Etsy can range anywhere from $20 to over $100. I wasn’t down with paying for something I knew I could make. After a trip to AC Moore (with a coupon, hooray) and Lowes, I was armed with everything I’d need to make my very own customizable (is that even a word?) medal holder.
It was originally going to be black, but silly me picked up green chalkboard paint instead of black. I was too antsy to get the project started to go back to the store and exchange it. As it turns out, I love the green. The chalkboard paint means we can update our PR’s or goals after every race or change up the top with a mantra or other inspiration.
From start to finish, it took me around 30 minutes to complete the project (not including paint drying time) and I’m super happy with how it turned out!
Wood board (I used 16×20″ plaque from AC Moore’s wood department)
9 #12×1 3/8″ Square Bend Hook
4 #14 x 1″ Square Bend Hook
2 sawtooth hangers
Race bibs to measure size
How You Do It:
Start by finding the center of your board and place race bibs down. I have two different sized bibs, and wanted to make a set of hooks for each size. Make marks where bibs will hang, using the safety pin holes as a guide.
Using your level, make two lines, 3″ apart towards the bottom of the board. Be sure to leave enough length at the top of the board for your bibs. Mark the center of the top line and make marks every 3″ on each side. These will be your hook locations for the top line.
On the second line, make marks at the same locations, then measure 1 1/2″ between those marks. These marks will be your hook locations for the bottom line (they will line up in between the top row). You’ll have 5 hooks on the first row and 4 hooks on the bottom. NOTE: You may need to adjust these measurements depending on the size of your board!
Drill pilot holes for the bibs and medal hooks. Paint board desired color and let dry. I used one of the hooks to mark hole locations to make sure paint didn’t fill the holes and make them impossible to find later on.
Once the paint has dried, attach two sawtooth hangers to the back of the board. This will allow you to hang the board on a wall. After the hangers are attached, screw in the #14×1′ hooks in the bib area and the #12x 1 3/8″ hooks for the medal hangers.
Hang on the wall, add your bibs and bling, and voila! You have yourself a great display for your greatest achievements.
