It never fails. When someone comes to visit us, we always end up at Niagara Falls. It’s always fun to see the falls, but we like to switch it up a little and find new areas to explore.
This weekend, we decided to stay on the American side of the Falls (the Canadian side affords better views and has more entertainment options, but crossing the border for a quick trip to the falls isn’t worth it) and headed over to Goat Island. Goat Island is the nicest area to view the falls from the American side.
Access to Goat Island costs $10 per vehicle, but it’s well worth it for the up-close views of the Horseshoe Falls and The American Falls.
There’s ample parking, restrooms, gift shop, restaurant, and access to The Cave of the Winds, a walkway at the bottom of the falls (additional charge.)
The best part of Goat Island, however, is the access to Luna Island. Luna Island is a little oasis that features great views of the American Falls and Bridal Veil Falls, a small nature walk, and a bit of shade, peace, and quiet from the busyness of the main viewing areas.
The walk will only take 20-30 minutes, depending on how long you stop to admire the different views of the river and falls, so it’s perfect for little ones.
The island and path are handicap accessible. You can access Luna Island from the main falls viewing area or just beyond the parking lot #1. The area closest to the falls has a small garden and comes alive with color in the spring and summer.
I highly suggest visiting Goat Island and Luna Island if you’re visiting the American side of Niagara Falls. If you’re a little braver than I am, try out the Cave of the Winds for an extra close view of the natural wonder that is Niagara Falls.
